RealPlayer

RealPlayer offers users the ability to stream videos and audio over the Internet. It was released in April of 1995 and was one of the first audio-streaming solutions of its time. You could possibly trace the originations of PodCasting (although it would be called a different name) to RealPlayers technology.

The first 3 versions of RealPlayer to be released only played audio files hence its original release name RealAudio Player. With the release of version 5+ RealPlayer supported video and was functional with Windows 95+. When version 6.0 was released the RealMedia (.rm & .ra) file format was born, however these formats were incompatible with previous versions. The stability of version 7 satisfied users and there was mixed responses to version 8 with reports of regular crashes.

RealPlayer starting going downhill with the release of version 9 named RealOne, it was bloated and annoyed users with the random pop-up messages, inability to play media files easily and was a security risk. The years leading up to the latest version 15.0, included UI updates, numerous bug fixes and making it compatible with emerging file formats. The latest version 15.0 integrates the ability to download videos from popular sites such as YouTube and Facebook. Users can also transfer media files from their computer to mobile devices.

Stability of versions all depends on your OS and PC spec. Going on general consensus, RealPlayer v.8 is stable on Win95C, RealOne v.1 stable on Win98SE, RealPlayer v.10 for XP and RealPlayer v.12 for Windows Vista and 7.

Versions prior to version 3.0 are no longer functional. RealPlayer over the years has been surpassed by many other media players, in the last few years the number of unique users of RealPlayer has dropped by 50% and their users are slowly dwindling away. RealPlayer is a great case study of version iterations gone terribly wrong and epitomizes our sites slogan: newer is not always better.

Pros Supports large number of file formats, converts videos, transfer media to mobile devices, compatible with popular social networking sites, burn CDs.

Cons Video/audio streaming slow, too many ads, uses PC resources, laggy.
