LimeWire the cross platform, easy to use peer-to-peer (P2P) program used to download content from the internet. LimeWire, which uses the gnutella network along with the BitTorrent protocol, is free to download and use and latest versions include filters to make downloading safer.
LimeWire was launched in 2000 and the aim was to give users direct access via a router to the Gnutella system, the first decentralized P2P network. Subsequently Gnutella designated this router as the default router for their P2P connections; within a year LimeWire became a huge hit. LimeWires popularity grew until they began bundling other programs with latest releases.
In 2004 LimeWire 3.x included the LimeShop program which was considered spyware; consequently LimeWire removed LimeShop from version 3.9.4 and all future releases and committed to not include any bundled software with their program. The release of LimeWire 5.5 in 2010 includes some new features such as better UI, firewall to firewall transfers, faster network connections as well as no bundled software or spyware. LimeWire is currently installed on a third of all PC users worldwide making it the most popular P2P application.
**It should be noted due to a federal investigation all versions later than LimeWire 5.5.10 will not work as they are disabled upon installation. We advise you to use versions 5.5.10 or earlier.
All versions of LimeWire are compatible with Windows 95 or later. There are no technical updates to versions prior than 5.5.10.
Pros: Fast, free, simple to use, not heavy on PC resources, works with old versions of Windows and lower spec PCs.
Cons: New versions discontinued due to lawsuit, downloaded files may contain viruses or spyware.
